In our global food system food can be caught in one country, processed and packaged in another, distributed and consumed in another. The average item of food travels 1500 miles from farm to table. With less than 3% of Americans considered healthy and up to 29% of greenhouse gas emissions being attributed to food production, something has happened to our food.
When companies are patenting genes, seeds, collecting DNA on a massive scale, creating new life in the lab, who really does have the right to claim nature as their own? Strange Fruit wrestles with some of these questions, along with this disconnection from our seemly mundane and yet highly mystical food system.
