Strange Fruit

(photography, archival prints)

In our global food system food can be caught in one country, processed and packed in another, distributed and consumed in another. Shockingly, the average item of food travels 1500 miles from farm to table and is responsible for 29% of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. Despite this, in the United States, less than 3% of the population is considered healthy, while a small number of large conglomerates continue to dominate the food industry.

With corporations patenting genes, designing self-terminating seeds, collecting DNA on a massive scale and creating new life in the lab, who really does have the right to claim nature and food as their own?

Strange Fruit wrestles with these issues and the detachment from our seemingly mundane yet highly mystical food system.
